Day 9: Insatiable Itches

I am happy to report that I did not wake up in excruciating pain. My soreness was gone when I woke up in the morning! However, as I write this, I have become sore from the day’s activity – which makes me think that maybe soreness is just inevitable.

Swelling is going down, finally. Still a lot of it left but I can finally see a bit of progress!

Something new: I am starting to get itching sensations on my face, around/on my nose. Except unlike a mosquito bite, the itching does not go away no matter how much I scratch the area! It’s almost like the itching is beneath the surface of the skin. Not sure if this means that the nerves are healing in that area? I think my nerves were slightly strained in that area. I don’t have completely numbness there; I can feel it when I touch that area with my fingers, but it feels almost as if it is not my own skin that I am touching, if that makes sense.

I don’t have much of an issue with anything else, I think… but I really miss being able to sing in the shower.

  1. I had my jaw surgery on the 9th of January too (although I had my lower jaw brought forward), and it’s really interesting to see how your recovery progress is going compared with mine. My swelling had almost completely disappeared until yesterday, when the right side of my face swelled up again. I was concerned that it was an infection, but since I had no fever, my surgeon assured me that it was quite normal for swelling to come back after having already gone down.

My whole chin and bottom lip are still both quite numb although it tingles and itches throughout the whole day and I can tell when someone is touching them. It seems like you’re experiencing the same thing with your numbness. My surgeon has reassured me that the tingling and itching is a sign that the nerve is working.

For me, the most frustrating thing right now is the food. I’m so desperate for different textures and I still have five weeks to go!

I look forward to hearing more about your recovery! 🙂

    • Hello! Yours was a single-jaw surgery? If so, that explains why your swelling went down faster! Most of my swelling is in the middle of my face, around my cheek area, probably from the upper jaw movement.

Haha the itching is irritating beyond compare, but at least it happens for a good reason!

I know!! I am getting SO tired of mushy food. I really want some pizza – in my dreams right? Yeah five weeks left for me too. Not sure how I am going to survive it…

Thank you for reading! 🙂 Update me as well, all right? It’s nice having a recovery buddy 🙂

  2. Hey Kim!

Thought I’d drop you a comment since I’m sure you could use the moral support at this time! I am scheduled for double jaw surgery as well on the 27th. I must have changed my mind about this surgery a hundred times in the past month and am scared about the recovery. It seems from all the blogs I’ve seen that once you’re past the 2 week mark things get much better. Keep up the good work!

    • Thank you for the comment 🙂 That’s perfectly understandable, it’s a major surgery after all. Yes, things definitely do get better after the first week. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine! All the best for your surgery! 😀
